The vision of the Child Advocacy Centers of South Dakota (CACSD) is that the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) Model is endorsed and utilized statewide as best practice in response to child maltreatment.

The mission of CACSD is to support communities by establishing and strengthening child advocacy centers (CACs) and multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) in order to better serve abused, vulnerable, and neglected children and their families.

Child Advocacy Centers of South Dakota (CACSD)

CACSD is an accredited State Chapter of the National Children’s Alliance and represents local children’s advocacy centers (CACs) in South Dakota. Each accredited State Chapter:

  • Represents a collaborative effort among membership, staff and its governing entity
  • Provides support services to emerging and existing children’s advocacy centers (CACs) and multidisciplinary teams (MDTs)
  • Assists with the development, continuation, and enhancement of the CAC model throughout the state
  • Facilitates a collaborative statewide network dedicated to a coordinated and comprehensive response to child abuse
  • Serves as a leading resource within the state in regard to child abuse issues and the children’s advocacy center model

CACSD was founded in 1998 and, today, its membership has grown to three accredited centers, serving children and families throughout South Dakota. Our organization provides training, support, technical assistance and leadership on a statewide level to local child advocacy centers and communities throughout South Dakota responding to reports of child abuse and neglect. CACSD strongly believes that the combined professional wisdom and skill of the multidisciplinary team approach results in a more complete understanding of case issues and the most effective child and family focused system response possible.

Child Advocacy Centers (CACs)

Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) are child-focused centers that coordinate the investigation, prosecution and treatment of child abuse, while helping abused children heal. CACs emphasize the coordination of investigation and intervention services by bringing together professionals and agencies as a multi-disciplinary team to create a child-focused approach to child abuse cases. These disciplines, including law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, mental health, medical and victim advocacy, child advocacy, work together to conduct interviews and make team decisions about investigation, treatment, management and prosecution of child abuse cases.
