The Child Advocacy Centers of South Dakota (CACSD)

CACSD is a network of Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) dedicated to helping local communities respond to allegations of child abuse in ways that are effective and efficient and put the needs of child victims first. The CACSD provides training, support, technical assistance and leadership on a statewide level to local Child Advocacy Centers and communities throughout South Dakota.

A child advocacy center is a child-focused, facility-based program, which utilizes multiple disciplinary team approach addressing allegations of child abuse. Representatives from many disciplines including law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, mental health, medical and victim advocacy, and child advocacy work together to conduct interviews and make team decisions about investigation, treatment, management, and prosecution of child abuse cases.

Putting the Needs of Children First

The Child Advocacy Centers of South Dakota strongly believe that the combined professional wisdom and skill of the multidisciplinary team approach results in a complete understanding of case issues and the most effective child and family focused system response possible.

The Child Advocacy Centers of South Dakota is an accredited Chapter of the National Children’s Alliance.

Jolene’s Law Task Force

Jolene’s Law Task Force was established by Senate Bill 154 during the 2014 legislative session to study the impact of sexual abuse of children in South Dakota and to discuss recommendations.

What to Look For

More than 800,000 children are confirmed as victims of abuse or neglect each year in the U.S., with one in three girls and one in five boys sexually assaulted before they reach the age of 18.

“In my twenty years of experience as the Victims Assistant for Pennington County, I have found the work of the Black Hills Child Advocacy Center to be an invaluable tool in working with young victims. I believe we are getting countless more disclosures from children than we did in the past because they feel safe and protected within the Center and with the highly trained interviewer. After these disclosures of abuse, the children are then referred to sources of help in the community, which will have a positive impact on our community for years to come.”
